Energy is not just a way for us to turn on our lights or how we get through the day, energy as a concept was believed to be described as how things come to work.

Energy was meant that any changes in objects or properties of an object. The idea that energy could be stored into objects began to be examined more closely by scientists. Some of the effects some real some projected came in many forms of energy.

Renewable Energy Discussion
Video of a discussion between Perry Farrell and Laurie David about alternate and renewable means of energy

Any changes that happened to people, they called physical science, any type of energy that reflected change in itself was called Chemical energy, which at the time was described as energy or changes in the combination of food and oxygen. Thermal energy was any changes that happened in the water heater and kinetic energy was any kind of change that occurred in machinery.

The term energy was first coined by Thomas Young, at that time scientist were called it vis viva that referred to a product of mass object and its velocity squared. In 1829, kinetic energy was coined by Gustave Gaspard Coriolis and in 1853, William Rankine coined the term potential energy.

Soon after the steam engine had made the engineers develop some concepts and some formulas that let them describe the functions of mechanical and thermal effiencies of their systems. The major names in the concept of the mechanical and thermal efficiencies were Sadi Carnot, James Prescott Joule, Emile Claperyon and Hermann von Helmholtz. Then William Thomson took all of those laws and turned them into his laws known today as thermodynamics.
